Mal Thursday began his broadcasting career at WMUA-FM in Amherst, Massachusetts, where he hosted “The Mal Thursday Show” from 1987 to 1990. He then hosted “The Oldie Show” on WRSI-FM from 1990 to 1994. Mal returned to the air in 2002, hosting a revival of “The Mal Thursday Show” on WFCF-FM in St. Augustine. In addition to “Florida Rocks Again!,” Mal will soon be heard on the syndicated “United States of Rock.”
A veteran of the garage rock scene, Mal fronted the Malarians from 1984 to 1990, and the Cheetahs (not to be confused with the Streetwalkin’ Cheetahs, or the Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies) from 1991 to 2000. His latest band, Mal Thursday & the New Cheetahs, specializes in “100% Florida Garage,” covering songs by The Barons, The Montells, and We The People, among others.
Mal ran his own record label, Chunk, from 1986 to 1999, with releases by such artists as Guided By Voices, Sebadoh, DMZ, the Lyres, New Radiant Storm King, Scud Mountain Boys, and Silver Jews. He has also directed music videos for Tag Sale, the Coopers, Hospital, and the Montreal Expos. As a music journalist, he has written for the Orlando Weekly, the Boston Phoenix, VMag, and Folioweekly, among others.
